What Makes a Good BJJ Gi?
Before we get into specific recommendations, here’s what actually matters when buying a gi.
GSM (grams per square metre)
This is the weight of the fabric. Lower GSM means lighter and cooler — better for summer training and travel. Higher GSM means more durable and harder to grip. Most BJJ gis sit between 350–550GSM. Anything below 350GSM is ultra-light competition spec. Anything above 550GSM is built for longevity.
Weave type
Pearl weave is the standard for BJJ — it’s light, strong, and breaks in quickly. Single weave is lighter but less durable. Double weave is heavy and bulletproof (more common in judo). Gold weave sits between pearl and double — durable without the bulk.
Pre-shrunk vs not
Any decent gi should be pre-shrunk. If it isn’t stated, assume it will shrink significantly on first wash and size up. All Valor gis are pre-shrunk.
IBJJF legal colours
If you compete under IBJJF rules, your gi must be white, blue, or black. No patches in non-matching colours. No odd colourways. If you’re buying for competition, check the ruleset for your specific event.
Fit

Once you’ve been training for 6–12 months and you know the sport is sticking, it’s worth investing in a gi that’ll last you through your blue belt and beyond.

BJJ Gi FAQ
How much should I spend on my first BJJ gi?
Between £60–£80 is the right range for a beginner. You don’t need the most expensive gi to start — you need one that fits well, is IBJJF legal, and will survive your first year of training. The Bravura at £65–£69 is exactly this.
What colour BJJ gi should I buy?
White, blue, or black are all safe options that will be legal at almost every competition. White shows up submissions in photos, blue is the most popular at academies, and black is the most forgiving in terms of staining. If you’re not sure, white or blue is the traditional choice.
What size BJJ gi do I need?

Will my gi shrink?
All Valor gis are pre-shrunk, but expect a small amount of initial shrinkage (1–2%) on the first wash. Wash in cold water, inside out, no fabric softener, and air dry. Never tumble dry a gi.
What’s the difference between a BJJ gi and a judo gi?
BJJ gis are cut tighter with shorter skirts and sleeves — less fabric for opponents to grab. Judo gis are heavier, looser, and cut for standing grappling where collar and sleeve grips dominate. You can train BJJ in a judo gi but it’ll feel baggy. You cannot compete in BJJ under IBJJF rules using a judo gi.
